1. Can this nuc be shipped or mailed to a buyer? Answer: Unfortunately this year my Nucs will need to be picked up at my home unless other arrangements have been previously made with me . Nucs are 4 frames, housed in a cardboard nuc box.
2. What kind of queen are you selling? Answer: The queen bee can vary from an Italian or Carniolan and they can come from CA, GA, and even from Hawaii.
3. Can I get some honey out of this queen and her bees my first year? Answer: Given a good year in the area you place your new hive and good to better beekeeping practices by you, you should receive some honey output the first year.
4. What must I have in the way of bee equipment when I get my nuc home? Answer: You should have: gloves, Bee gloves, a bee veil, related bee hat, a standard 10 frame hive box with an inner cover to transfer the 4 frames into the nuc and then add 5 more frames of comb or frames with foundation, a bottom board and a few concrete blocks to set the hive on, and a top cover.
5. What is the best location for my new hive? Answer: When you set up your hive, make sure you select a location away from people and if possible near a water source like a lake or small stream. Also keep in mind that bees travel in regular flyways between the hive and their food and water, so don't select a location that has people and bees crossing paths. It is best to place the hive facing South and it is a good idea to place hives where a wind block is in place for hives that go into cold weather.
6. What if I'm a new beekeeper and need help? Answer: You may want to contact your local Agricultural office for help in getting in touch with a local beekeeping association for your area. These folks can tell you very quickly what extra equipment you will need.
7. Have you had any problems with the small hive beetle? Answer: None to date. Ohio has a really excellent program when it come to inspections and they are on top of any problems that may occur with beekeepers that sell bees. All hives that are used to develop nucs are inspected completely.
8. What exactly, is a Nuc and how big is it? Answer: The nuc is about half the size of a standard hive In dimensions and colored just like a cardboard box. The nuc box is light weight and specifically designed to easily accommodate 4 frames with bees, brood, and some honey or other sweetener and enough space around the frames for the bees to move.
9. Can my Nuc box be used for anything after I put my bees into a regular hive? Answer: Sure. The Nuc container is very sturdy and could be used for: housing your splits for transportation, creating a queen bank, hiving swarms, or a bait hive.
10. What is the best way to transport this Nuc? Answer: It is recommended that whenever possible the nuc should be transported in the back of a truck. If some bees should get out, they are not in a confined space with people. It also increases ventilation to the Nuc during movement. Some people have transported them in the trunk of a car and had no problems; however, our best advice is in the bed of a truck tied down to limit movement from front to back and side to side.
